Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges are popular dental restorations used to fix or replace teeth that are broken or missing. They are set prosthetic devices cemented onto existing teeth or dental implants. They are made to make the teeth work better and look better. Let’s take a look at each one on its own:

  • Dental Crowns– A dental crown, sometimes called a “cap,” is a tooth-shaped covering that is put on a tooth that is broken, has decay, or is weak. It completely covers the part of the tooth that is exposed above the gumline. A dental crown gives the tooth its original shape, size, strength, and look.

A dental crown can protect a weak tooth from further damage, fix a broken or severely worn-down tooth, cover a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t much natural tooth structure left, hold a dental bridge in place, cover a dental implant, or improve the look of a misshapen or severely discolored tooth. Depending on the wants and preferences of the patient, crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, or a combination of these materials.

  • Dental Bridges– Dental bridges repair one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap between two nearby teeth. They comprise one or more false teeth (pontics) held in place by caps on the teeth on either side of the gap. There are different kinds of dental bridges, including standard, cantilever, Maryland, and bridges held in place by implants. The type of bridge suggested will rely on where the missing teeth are, how the teeth around them look, and what the patient wants. Like dental crowns, dental bridges can be made of different materials. Porcelain and clay bridges are famous because they can match the color of the natural teeth, making them look smooth and natural.

Getting tooth crowns or bridges takes two or more trips to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the teeth for the crown or bridge by removing a small amount of enamel. To make crowns that fit perfectly, impressions of the teeth are made. A temporary crown or bridge may be put on the teeth to protect them while the permanent repair is made in a dental lab. During the second visit, the temporary restoration is removed, and the custom-made crown or bridge is fully cemented or bonded. Both dental crowns and bridges are strong and can last for a long time with the proper care and upkeep. Regular dental checkups, good oral hygiene, and not doing things that can damage the restorations. If you have broken or missing teeth, you must see a dentist to determine the best way to fix your smile and keep your oral health in good shape.
